How to Care for Your Kashmiri Embroidered Kurti

A Kashmiri embroidered kurti is not a fast-fashion piece. With the right care it will look beautiful for years. With the wrong care, you can damage it in a single wash.

Washing Rules

Always hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never machine wash โ€” the agitation will loosen embroidery threads. Never wring or twist โ€” gently press water out and lay flat on a clean towel to dry in shade.

For the first wash, dry cleaning is recommended to preserve thread tension and colour.

Storing Your Kurti

Never hang an embroidered kurti โ€” the weight of the fabric stretches the embroidered areas over time. Fold it along the natural creases and store in a breathable cotton bag. Add a small cedar block to deter moths.

Ironing

Iron on a low-heat setting on the reverse side. Place a thin cloth between the iron and the embroidery to protect the thread work. Never iron directly over aari embroidery โ€” the heat can flatten and damage the stitching.
