Zari or Zardozi is believed to have a Persian origin (about 300 years ago). This luxurious embroidery type is a needlework done with golden and silver metallic threads. It gives an elegant and dressy look to any garment it is done on. Mostly done on luxurious fabrics like velvet, silk, or crepe, its intricacy appeals to many. 
The method used to make Zari has not changed and still ahdered to tradition. Four key steps are involved in the production process. The first one is designing. The design is drawn with a pencil on butter paper, and the outline is then punctured with a needle. Next, the design is traced onto the fabric by placing the butter paper on top of it while it is carefully spread on a flat table. Now the colour solution is dabbed over the butter paper with the help of a small cloth piece. The ink and design are effortlessly transferred to the fabric. Next the fabric is stretched tightly on a wooden frame. Artisans sit around the frame to begin embroidering. It takes a few days to a few weeks, depending upon the design. By the end of this time period, embroidery is done, excess threads are snipped off and only after a strict quality check, the product is made available for sale.
