The paisley did not start in Scotland. It started here, and Kashmir has been drawing it for six hundred years.

The buta — the teardrop paisley — travelled from Kashmiri shawls to Paisley, Scotland, and took the town's name with it. On this clock the motif is engraved by hand into the copper frame, curling around the dial the same way it curls across a kani shawl.

FAQs

What is the paisley motif called in Kashmir?
Buta. It appears on kani shawls, papier mache, copper, and walnut wood, and is the motif that gave the Scottish town of Paisley its association with the design.

Is the engraving done by hand?
Yes, chiselled by a naqash before assembly. Machine-embossed frames have uniform depth; these do not.

Does the clock come with a battery?
No, batteries are not included in the shipment.
