A 24 inch shikara that combines two Kashmiri crafts: a walnut wood base carved by a wood artisan, then hand painted in papier mache naqashi work.

Product Overview

The wood gives the boat its structure and weight, the painting gives it colour and pattern. Because two different artisans work on each piece, one carving and one painting, fusion shikaras are produced in far smaller numbers than plain carved ones.

About Kashmiri Walnut Wood

Kashmir is the only region in India where walnut trees grow at the altitude required for dense, close-grained timber, which is what allows a 24 inch hull to hold its shape.

Craftsmanship

The wood work is completed first, then the piece goes to a naqash painter who applies fine layered motifs freehand with a squirrel hair brush.

Story Behind the Craft

Kashmir carries two decorative traditions that rarely meet on the same object: walnut wood carving and papier mache naqashi painting. This shikara places them together, wood giving the structure and paint giving the colour.

Naqashi is done freehand without stencils, built up in fine layers, which is why no two painted shikaras carry identical motifs.

FAQs

What is naqashi painting?
Naqashi is the Kashmiri hand painting tradition applied to papier mache, built up in fine layers with a squirrel hair brush. Motifs are usually floral and painted freehand.

How do I clean the painted surface?
Dust with a dry soft brush only. Never use a damp cloth, spray or cleaner, as moisture lifts hand painted detail permanently.

Why is this priced above the plain carved shikara?
Two crafts and two artisans. The wood work is completed first, then the piece goes to a naqash painter, adding time and a second specialist skill.

Will sunlight affect it?
Yes. Direct sunlight fades hand mixed pigment over time. Display it away from a window that gets direct sun.

Is the base real walnut wood?
Yes. The structure is genuine Kashmiri walnut wood; the painted decorative work is papier mache applied over it.

Can I order this in bulk?
Limited bulk with long lead time, since output depends on two workshops. WhatsApp +91 7006586760.
