A two foot square panel that brings two Kashmiri crafts onto one surface: a carved walnut wood base with embossed papier mache work forming a samavar.

Product Overview

The samavar is raised off the panel in papier mache and hand painted, while the surrounding field is carved walnut. Two separate artisans work on a piece like this, one carver and one naqash painter, which is why fusion panels are made in small numbers.

About Kashmiri Walnut Wood

Kashmir is the only region in India where walnut trees grow at the altitude required for dense, close-grained timber. The wood is naturally rich brown and takes fine detail without splitting.

Craftsmanship

The wood work is completed first, then the panel goes to a naqash painter who builds the papier mache motif and paints it freehand with a fine brush.

Story Behind the Craft

Kashmir carries two decorative traditions that rarely meet on the same object: walnut wood carving and papier mache naqashi painting. This panel places them together, wood giving the structure and paint giving the colour.

The samavar is central to Kashmiri hospitality. Kahwa is brewed and poured from one at weddings, winter gatherings and everyday visits.

FAQs

What is a samavar?
A samavar is the tall copper vessel used across Kashmir to brew and pour kahwa. It appears at weddings, winter gatherings and everyday hospitality.

What is papier mache work?
Kashmiri papier mache, or naqashi, is hand painted decorative work built on a moulded paper pulp base. On this panel it forms the raised samavar.

How do I clean the painted section?
Dust with a dry soft brush only. Never wipe it with a damp cloth or any cleaner, as moisture lifts hand painted detail permanently.

Why are fusion pieces made in small numbers?
Two artisans and two skills are involved in every unit, so output is limited by both workshops rather than one.

Will sunlight affect it?
Yes. Direct sunlight fades hand mixed pigment over time. Hang it away from a window that gets direct sun.

Can I order this in bulk?
Limited bulk is possible with long lead time. WhatsApp +91 7006586760 to discuss quantity and timelines.
